Special Notes for Spring

Lyme Disease is on the Rise

The CDC has done  multiple studies on the spread of Lyme Disease and practices on reducing its spread.  Last year out of a study of 2500 ticks over 50% of the deer ticks studied carried Lyme Disease.  In the US over 300,000 people contract the disease with most of them being in New England.  Vermont in the last couple of years has been hit particularly hard with new cases because Vermont and northern states felt they were immune to the disease.  Immune from it because the thoughts their colder winters would reduce the spread.   However, this is no longer the case with Vermont having warmer winters.  Last year Vermont had more cases than Connecticut and this year promises  to have the same or more because of again warmer winter and not being prepared.

The moose population has no immune system to the Lyme carrying tick found in deer ticks  and are being decimated, our livestock are getting covered in Lyme caring ticks and it is possible for our domestic livestock to be affected.

Mulching Reduces the Spread of Lyme Disease

Most of our properties be it residential rural / farms throughout Vermont and Northern New England are either surrounded by fields or in close proximity to wood lots.

It has been determined that a simple buffer between habitation (lawn) with field or wood lot can greatly reduce the spread of Lyme Disease.  The best methods are:

  • Clearing tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns.
  • Creating at least a 3-ft wide barrier with wider being better in mulch.
  • Forestry mulching creates a mulch barrier.
  • Forestry mulching in the woods helps in eliminating the brambles, invasive species like Barberry is known to attracting  deer ticks as well as  slash debris.
  • All can be mulched with a forestry mulch tractor reducing the spread of Lyme Disease.

Beech Hill Vegetation mulches all brush, brambles and undesirable trees in and around properties and therefore the mulch is one of the Best deterrents for the migration and spread of Lyme Disease.
